National Civil Rights Museum

Every January we, as a country, celebrate the birthday of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King. We will remember the work that he accomplished, and the messages that he both brought to us, and has left with us to deal with, each in our own way. But it is important that we think about those messages every day of the year, not just one day out of 365.

The Family Site today visits a site that shows both the positive and negative sides of our society, and our history. It is called the National Civil Rights Museum. Here are presented events that we should remember, and learn from. From Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka to a balcony in front of a motel room in Memphis, it is all here for us to see. The lessons that we learn should then be put into practice, to a point that they become the rule, rather than the exception, in our daily lives.

A visit here will be one that is not soon forgotten. But is a necessary one. As a country, we need to learn from our past not to repeat the mistakes that have been made before. We must learn to show by our actions, the attitude of our minds. Only then can we start to realize the dream of Dr. King, “…free at last, thank God Almighty, I’m free at last”.
